Phillies' Weston Wilson becomes first rookie in franchise history to reach cycle

All Weston Wilson needed was a double to complete the cycle. The Philadelphia Phillies held an eight-run lead over the Washington Nationals and received a helpful tip from superstar teammate Bryce Harper.

“Harper was on the top step and he was telling me, 'If you hit him, keep running. Don't stop until second base,'” Wilson said, laughing.

In the eighth inning, the 29-year-old rookie lined a ball to right field. Right fielder Alex Call couldn't catch it on a diving attempt. Wilson scrambled to second base to become the first rookie in Phillies history to hit for the cycle on Thursday.

“I thought he was more in the gap,” Wilson said. “I saw him coming and I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me.' I saw him get away and thankfully he didn't catch it.”

Wilson received a standing ovation from the Philadelphia faithful, including his pregnant wife, who was in attendance. They are expecting a baby boy on Sept. 1.

Wilson, batting eighth in the lineup, tripled and singled in a five-run fourth inning for the Phillies. He homered in the seventh and doubled in the eighth to complete the cycle and cap the Phillies' 13-3 victory.

Wilson's cycle was the 10th in Phillies history. Catcher JT Realmuto hit for the cycle against the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. Wilson's cycle was the first at home since 2004, when David Bell did it.

Wilson has shown a flair for the dramatic in his short MLB career. In his first major league at-bat – after 706 minor league games – he hit a home run.

MLB will take Wilson's cleats, bats and all of his equipment except his batting gloves from his historic night.

“I don't know what they're doing with this. I'll have to find out.”

Since being called up from Triple-A in July, Wilson is hitting .414 in his last eight starts.

“I just try to get good at-bats every chance I get.”

If he continues to hit like this, Wilson could play a major role in the Phillies' run to a World Series postseason berth in October.

The Phillies will play the Nationals again on Friday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
