Phillies and Giants benches clear after a sequence of close pitches nearly hits Phillies' Bryce Harper

Tempers reached a boiling point during a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

The Phillies entered the game with the best record in the Major Leagues. But, during one particular plate appearance, one of his best players, Bryce Harper, became visibly upset after a pair of fastballs knocked him down.

The players emerged from their respective dugouts after Giants pitcher Kyle Harrison launched consecutive fastballs high and in.

Harper avoided the dust and stayed close to home plate at Oracle Park. He later clarified that the pitches didn't actually make him angry, but he just didn't want to get hit.

“He didn't mean it,” Harper said after the game. “I didn't want to get hit in the face again. That's all… You get hit in the face, man, it's not fun. That's all.”

Harrison also noted that he had no intention of hitting Harper, he simply wanted to record an out.

“I would have gone back in. Why not, you know?” Harrison said, via NBC Sports Giants. “We're trying to get guys out, and it's a point where I thought I could get it out. It may have leaked out a little bit, too.” [far] “Just focus on the baseball side and try to execute, and that's it.”
