Pep Guardiola: “I'm not sure City are ready despite Community Shield win”

Pep Guardiola says he does not know if Manchester City will be ready for the start of the Premier League season despite winning the Community Shield against Manchester United.

City won on penalties after drawing 1-1 at Wembley on Saturday.

Guardiola's side begin their title defence against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend but say they have not learned much from the win over United.

“I can't say if we're ready,” the city manager said.

“We could have lost today, we were close to losing with minutes left and that's why we have to wait. Today I saw a lot of things that I like. The first 35 minutes were more than excellent, unexpected for the time we've been together.

“We are far from our best form. It's normal, but it's better to start with a title won.”

“It's nicer but the reality is that nothing has changed because we won.”

City were on the verge of losing until substitute Bernardo Silva equalised with a close-range header late on, sending the match to penalties.

Silva's goal came from a clever turn and cross from Oscar Bobb, one of City's standout players that day.

The youngster enjoyed an impressive pre-season tour of the US and is set to play a key role during the opening weeks of the season as the international players get up to speed.

“We want more,” Guardiola said.

“He needs to do his actions in the final third more regularly. Sometimes he has the chance to take the ball and go out and he's a bit passive, but he has something unique. From a stop, his first steps to the right and left are incredible.

“His goal-scoring, his positioning behind the ball and the way he turns and crosses are all of great quality. He has an incredible work ethic, his intensity in pressing and reading to defend are really good, but he is still young. He still has the ability to do it, he needs to do it more regularly.”
