Nottingham Forest reject Matt Turner loan move and want transfer, sources say

Nottingham Forest have rejected multiple loan offers for US international goalkeeper Matt Turner, with the Premier League club preferring him to leave on a permanent transfer, sources have told ESPN.

Turner, 30, has endured a difficult time at Forest since joining them last year in a transfer worth $9 million with add-ons that would possibly push the fee up to $12.48 million. Turner staked his claim as first-choice goalkeeper for the first half of the season but eventually lost his place in the starting lineup to Matz Sels after a difficult period in goal. In total, Turner made 21 league and cup appearances last season.

Turner's fortunes have not improved since then. He played in all three of the United States' matches at the 2024 Copa America, a tournament in which the country failed to advance past the group stage.

Meanwhile, Forest have signed Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Miguel from Corinthians and as a result Turner has been absent from the squad for each of Forest's two competitive fixtures this season.

Turner is determined to retain his starting place in the US national team, so a loan seems the best option, with the American international attracting interest from both the English league and the Bundesliga. However, Forest are keen to recoup as much of last year's outlay as possible and are attempting to secure a transfer fee for the player.

Now that the U.S. and Canadian transfer windows have closed, a return to MLS (where Turner began his professional career with the New England Revolution in 2016) is no longer an option. The transfer window in England closes on Friday, while the window in Germany closes on Sept. 2.
