North Carolina announced Tuesday that he has hired Roush Fenway Kesellowski Racing, Steve Newmark, as the successor of Atlético Bubba Cunningham director.
Newmark will serve as an executive associate director from next month, focusing on promoting income in football and male and female basketball, before making the transition to the Atlético director in summer 2026.
Cunningham will become a main advisor to Newmark and Foreign Minister Lee Roberts. As part of the succession plan, Cunningham received an extension of the two -year contract until July 2029. Given the changing university panorama in this new era of income exchange, North Carolina believes that making these changes will now help serve the Athletics Department in the future.
In a statement, Cunningham said: “As part of my last extension of the contract, I promised to work with university leadership in a succession plan that would positively position Carolina Athletics and our 28 teams for the future. I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and improve my role in a way that will allow me to continue supporting our pending students, coaches and personnel as we move forward and browse for the change of athletics.
Newmark, Native of Chapel Hill, has served as president of RFK Racing for the past 15 years. Before joining RFK Racing, Newmark was a member of a law firm based in Charlotte, where he worked extensively with the SEC, the US conference and the NCAA.
He also served in the Advisory Committee that helped hire Bill Belichick.
“I hope to work with Bubba and the entire Tar Heel nation to continue raising the status of UNC as a main brand in university sports with top -level programs in all areas, and with athlete students who represent the flagship institution of North Carolina with class inside and outside their respective playgrounds,” said Newmark in a statement. “With university athletics experiencing massive changes at all levels, UNC is well positioned to take advantage of the new panorama.”
Cunningham was hired in November 2011, and during his mandate, North Carolina, won 24 national titles and has 11 best results in the Cup of Directors of Learfield, including number 4 for season 2024-25, drawing its best ending in the last 16 years.
