Netflix series about Simone Biles could provide evidence in Jordan Chiles' Olympic medal investigation, court documents say

Jordan Chiles is coming to try to reclaim her bronze medal, and Simone Biles may be right behind her.

Chiles and her legal team filed an appeal with the Swiss Federal Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by the Paris Olympics that denied her third place in the women's floor gymnastics final. Chiles dropped from third to fifth after American coaches filed an appeal too late that boosted her score over Romanian competitors. She was told to return the bronze medal, but there are no reports that she has or will do so.

Now, as Chiles and her legal team seek to reinstate her as an official medalist, their case may be helped by footage from a new Netflix documentary series focused on Biles.

According to court documents filed Monday at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, her lawyer has submitted images from the company that produces Biles' Netflix series that they say show visual evidence in favor of Chiles. They claim the images prove the request for review that raised Chiles' score was not filed late, according to multiple reports.

The documents show that the query by American coach Cecile Landy came 49 seconds after the result was known, which falls within the 60-second time limit allowed for appeals.

Chiles' lawyers have argued that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which issued the final ruling, “violated Chiles' 'fundamental right to be heard' by refusing to consider video evidence showing her query was submitted in a timely manner, in direct contradiction to the conclusions of the CAS decision.”

Her lawyers also claimed that CAS President Hamid G. Gharavi was acting in a conflict of interest. The medal, which had initially been won by Romanian Ana Babosu and was withdrawn after a review and then returned, represented a country with which Gharavi had close ties. Gharavi acted as Romania’s lawyer for nearly a decade and had been an active representative of the nation at the time CAS decided to strip Chiles of her medal.

Chiles gave his first interview about the incident this week during a panel at the Forbes Most Powerful Women Summit On Wednesday 2024, the gymnast became visibly emotional when asked about the topic.

“For me, everything that has happened has nothing to do with the medal, it has to do, you know, with the color of my skin,” Chiles said through tears.

Chilies previously claimed In a statement posted to X on August 15, Chiles faced “racial attacks” from social media users. When Chiles won the bronze medal, it resulted in the first gymnastics podium in Olympic history to feature three black contestants.

Biles has been openly supportive of her teammate during this time, as she was the one who initially stood on the first all-black podium in the floor exercise final alongside her and Brazil's Rebecca Andrade.

The controversy has put the judges who scored the event under scrutiny. The Centre for Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) issued a joint statement on August 15 condemning the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the judging team for the result.

“Had the FIG put in place such a mechanism or agreement, many headaches would have been avoided,” the CAS ad hoc group said in a statement. “The group expresses the hope that the FIG will draw the consequences of this case, concerning these three extraordinary athletes and also other athletes and their support staff, in the future, so that this does not happen again.”

It has been an emotional point of contention for both the Americans and the Romanians since the day of the floor exercise final in Paris.

Barbosu had initially claimed the bronze medal on floor on Monday and began celebrating on the mat. But then the U.S. coaches appealed to the judges about Chiles' score and a review resulted in a 0.1-point increase, putting Chiles ahead of Barbosu in the bronze medal match.

The initial decision sparked a wave of backlash. Gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci condemned the scoring change on social media and Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he would boycott the event. Paris Olympics' closing ceremony by scoreboard decision.

Everything changed on the last day of the Olympics, just before the closing ceremony. That's when CAS ruled that the event's judging panel had improperly granted an investigation that increased Chiles' score. The next day, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) ruled that Chiles would have to return the medal.

Chiles became only the third gymnast in history to have an Olympic medal stripped from her. The other two were China's Dong Fangxiao and Romania's Andreea Răducan, who lost their medals from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Meanwhile, Barbosu received his own official bronze medal on August 16 and expressed his sympathy for Chile.
