Ohio State's Neal Shipley edged out fellow US Open debutant Luke Clanton of Florida State to win the amateur level, making him the first player to win those honors at the Masters and US Open in the same year since Viktor Hovland in 2019.
Shipley shot 2-over 72 on Sunday and finished with 6-over 286.
Clanton had a 5-foot birdie putt to tie it, but he missed it to the right and left himself a nearly 5-foot comeback that he missed. Clanton had a bogey, a closing 74 and an 8-over total.
Shipley had a consistent week, shooting 70 with four birdies on Thursday and following up with rounds of 73, 71 and 72. Clanton had a 76 in the first round before rebounding with back-to-back 69s, but made bogeys on three of his final four holes on Sunday. .
Shipley, runner-up to Nick Dunlap at the 2023 US Amateur, finished tied for 53rd at the Masters, where he was the only amateur to make the cut this year.
He finished tied for 35th at last month's NCAA golf championship; Clanton was tied for second place.
