A male basketball player from the state of Fresno manipulated his performance for game purposes and conspired with two players to make bets on their statistics, according to the results of an NCAA investigation published on Wednesday.
The NCAA ruled that the state striker, Mykell Robinson, the state guard of San José, Steven Vásquez, and the state guard of Fresno, Jalen Weaver, are not permanently eligible due to the violations of the games of chance and are no longer registered in their schools.
Robinson and Vásquez, who were roommates in the state of Fresno during the 2023-24 season, conspired to bet on Robinson to have a lower performance during a game of January 7, 2025 between the state of Fresno and the state of Colorado. Three support bets were made for a total of $ 2,200 in Robinson's statistics. The bets, which were marked by a Nevada sports notebook, won a net of $ 15,950. Vásquez and a “sports merchant”, according to NCAA.
“During the game, Robinson altered his performance, with three points scored, two rebounds, a triple and without assistance, to ensure that underlying bets won,” the NCAA wrote in their synopsis of cases.
Robinson also placed 13 support bets on daily fantasy sites from December 11, 2024 until January 11, 2025, according to NCAA.
The NCAA investigation also discovered that Robinson and Weaver, who were teammates in the state of Fresno, discussed the betting lines in the statistics of the other and made bets on themselves and among themselves in select games. Weaver, who cooperated with the investigation, also placed a part of $ 50's Parly in itself, Robinson and a third-athlete student, and won $ 260, said the NCAA.
“I respect NCAA's decision and have taken responsibility,” Weaver told ESPN in a text message. “My approach is now in my professional career, where I am committed to demonstrating myself from the Court.”
Robinson declined to comment when he was contacted by ESPN, and the efforts to get to Vásquez were not successful.
Robinson played for the last time for the state of Fresno on January 11 against Nevada. Vásquez graduated from the state of San José in May. The NCAA said Robinson and Vásquez did not cooperate with their investigation.
Fresno State told ESPN in a statement that he cooperated with the NCAA throughout the investigation and that he received no sanction of the case. “The state of Fresno is maintained at the highest standards of integrity, character and sportsmanship, and has an unwavering commitment to compliance with all the rules of the NCAA and the Conference,” reads the statement.
ESPN reported in February that the NCAA and the state of Fresno were investigating whether two male basketball players had played in daily fantasy competitions based on their own performances.
Weaver told ESPN at that time that he played a daily fantasy contest in its total points in the Bulldogs house against New Mexico on December 31. Weaver said he risked $ 50 that would score more than 11 points on the sleeping fantasy site. He finished with 13 points in a 103-89 defeat against the wolves.
