NBA All-Star says fans have been tougher amid rise in sports betting: 'For half the world… I'm supportive'

In the last six years, 37 states and Washington, DC, have legalized some form of sports betting, and many of those states allow people to place bets directly out of pocket.

The amount of sports betting placed today was unimaginable even half a decade ago, and the options are endless.

Of course, spreads and totals are still the most popular, but now there are practically bets on everything, including those based on a single player's performance.

“Player props” have led to more hate on social media, says an NBA All-Star.

“For half the world, I'm just helping them make money on DraftKings or whatever. I'm supportive,” Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton said earlier this week. “That's what my social media is mostly about.”

In a form of comic irony, Haliburton said he “doesn't give a damn” when someone tells you that you lost considerable funds due to your performance.

But with the harsh words both on social media and in person, Haliburton says he's been seeing a sports psychologist for “the last two years.”

“It's been good. I mean, even when I'm not [struggling]”I think there have to be conversations at other times too, because it's obvious that what happens on the court happens on the court…” he said, “I think it's important for us, as basketball players, as men, to bring out those things because not everyone cares to hear how we feel…

“I think it's important for us to have someone to talk to…I think it's important for us to just have conversations with people who really value who we are as human beings.”
