Butker's commencement speech at Benedictine College was widely debated and criticized for accusations of sexism. She urged graduates to embrace being “housewives” and criticized the LGBTQ community and President Biden for his stance on abortion.

In the speech, Butker added: “Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media, are consequences of the pervasiveness of disorder.”

Butker stood by his statements and expressed as much in the days following the controversy. At a gala in May, he said he understands he has become a “more polarizing” figure the more he has spoken out about his beliefs, but that he will never care what people think of him.

“Our love for Jesus, and therefore our desire to speak, must never be overtaken by our fallen nature's longing to be loved by the world. Glorifying God and not ourselves must always be our motivation despite any opposition or even support. I lean on those closest to me for guidance, but I can never forget that it is not people, but Jesus Christ that I am trying to please.”
