A chaotic scene erupted at one of the first Olympic men's soccer matches at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne, France, on Wednesday.
The opening Group B match between Morocco and Argentina was decided at the last minute. Argentina thought they had scored an equaliser in added time, which would have earned them a draw and points to advance to the knockout stage.

However, angry Moroccan fans stormed the pitch to protest the late goal. Objects were thrown onto the pitch and security guards had to stop the invaders. At the end of the match, bottles and glasses were strewn across the pitch.
The fans who filled the stadium thought that Argentine Cristian Medina's goal in the 16th minute of added time had meant the equaliser. It was thought that the final whistle had blown and the match was over. The fans were told that the match had been suspended and had to leave the stadium.

About an hour later, the organizers said the match had not officially ended yet and that VAR was reviewing whether the goal would count. The players returned to the field to warm up for the final minutes and a referee informed Argentina that the decision on the goal had been overturned because Argentina was offside.
The match resumed in a virtually empty stadium and lasted another three minutes before the final whistle was heard.
Morocco won the match 2-1.
