Mason Greenwood scores twice amid boos on Marseille debut

Mason Greenwood scored twice on his debut for Marseille in a 5-1 win over Brest in their French league opener on Saturday.

Greenwood, the former Manchester United striker who made a controversial move to Marseille this summer, was involved in all five goals, having also provided two assists and won a penalty which Elye Wahi converted.

Greenwood's Ligue 1 debut was met with boos that echoed throughout Brest's Stade Francis-Le Blé every time he touched the ball. The striker, 22, was arrested in 2022 and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The case was dropped last year.

Brest, who finished third last season and are ready to compete in the Champions League, struggled throughout the match. A missed penalty by Romain Del Castillo in the first half exposed their lack of accuracy.

“It wasn't our level,” said Brest coach Eric Roy. “We gave them too much space in defence.”

Following PSG's 4-1 win over Le Havre in their season opener on Friday, Marseille lead the standings on goal difference after coach Roberto de Zerbi's first game in charge.
