Mariners' Victor Robles criticized for 'silly' baserunning errors in loss to Yankees: 'Absolutely ridiculous'

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, and one of the reasons the Mariners only scored one run came in the bottom of the first inning on what was called an “absolutely ridiculous” decision by Victor Robles.

Seattle had the bases loaded, two outs and Justin Turner at the plate, a hitter who has a career batting average above .320 in situations like this. Yankees starter Luis Gil struggled to find the strike zone and threw three straight balls for a 3-0 count with nowhere to put Turner.

New York had scored two runs in the top of the inning on Aaron Judge's RBI double, so the Mariners were in good position to potentially tie or even take the lead.

But Robles got too aggressive at third base as he watched Gil, who wasn't looking at him, pick up the bag of rosin from behind the mound.

Robles lined the ball to the plate, but Gil quickly threw it to his catcher, Austin Wells, who bunted for the out.

That's how the inning ended and no one could understand why Robles decided it was okay to leave.

During the YES Network broadcast for the Yankees, Michael Kay and Jeff Nelson couldn't believe their eyes after the play.

“Absolutely ridiculous, 3-0, and Justin Turner looking toward the dugout like, 'Really?'” Kay said.

Nelson added that it was a “dumb” mistake by Robles, who was replaced as designated hitter by Mitch Garver when it was his turn to bat again.

While interim manager Dan Wilson wouldn't say whether Robles' substitution was because of that play or the hit on the hand Gil took on his first pitch of the game, he didn't have any harsh words for the veteran when asked about stealing home.

“Vic is an aggressive player, there's no doubt about it, and that's part of the game,” Wilson said. “It's a situation where you have to know you're going to get it done. He got his hand in, but he couldn't get it done safely. We're hoping he can bounce back tomorrow.”

Robles waited until Gil's back was completely turned before going for the resin bag, but as one X user wrote: “I understand why Robles thought he could pull it off, but not NOW, man.”

The Yankees were without starter Bryan Woo, who didn't allow a run in either of his previous two starts against New York. Judge had four RBIs, while Juan Soto and top prospect Jasson Dominguez each homered in a 10-1 victory.

While the Yankees extended their lead in the American League East, thanks in part to the San Francisco Giants' 10-0 rout of the Baltimore Orioles, the Mariners fell three games out of an AL wild-card spot.
