Manchester United have revealed their new 2024-25 away kit, which sees the Premier League club return to a classic blue change shirt after spending last season in a murky, dirty green.
Technically, the specific shade of United's new away shirt is “Night Indigo” so as not to be confused with the sky blue hue favoured by their city rivals.
In fact, United have been dabbling in the use of blue away kits since the early 20th century. However, the specific inspiration for their latest offering comes from their kits of the 1990s, when the club produced a series of blue-tinted alternate kits in quick succession.
As modelled by a range of contemporary stars including Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Alejandro Garnacho and Ella Toone, as well as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro, who may not be United players when wearing this shirt, the 'M' graphic is intended as a tribute to the embossed monogram detailing that can be found on a number of United's most popular shirts throughout the decade.
The 2024-25 shirt features a retro-style 'M' graphic woven into the fabric and three light blue wavy lines woven into the collar, which are meant to represent the three rivers that flow through Manchester: the Irk, the Medlock and the Mersey.
There's also more than a whiff of the “England one-day international cricket” kit, as fans immediately noticed when images of the kit began leaking on social media several months ago.
