Manchester United extend manager Erik ten Hag's contract until 2026

Erik ten Hag has extended his contract at Manchester United, the club confirmed on Thursday.

The Dutchman's contract runs until 2026 and he will retain the title of “first-team coach” after United activated a one-year option.

Sources have told ESPN that discussions over Ten Hag's management revamp are continuing, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake set to arrive at Old Trafford.

“I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” said Ten Hag.

“Looking back over the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still a lot of work ahead to reach the level expected of Manchester United, which means fighting for English and European titles.

“In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision to achieve those goals, and we are all firmly committed to embarking on that journey together.”

Ten Hag will remain on the current terms of his contract, meaning he will retain the transfer ban that was part of the deal when he joined from Ajax in 2022.

Rather than negotiate a new deal, United opted to trigger a one-year extension that will keep the 54-year-old under contract until June 2026. His current deal was set to expire in 2025.

Ten Hag's future was in serious doubt after a season in which United finished eighth in the Premier League before finishing on a high with victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

New sporting director Dan Ashworth admitted the end-of-season review “highlighted areas for improvement” but insisted Ten Hag remains the right man for the job.

“With two trophies in the last two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most successful managers in European football,” Ashworth said, days after officially moving to United on Monday following protracted negotiations with Newcastle.

“While last season's club review highlighted areas for improvement, it also came to the clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner we could work with to improve standards and results.

“This group of players and staff have already proven they are capable of competing and winning at the highest level; now we need to do it more consistently.

“With our football management team now strengthened, we look forward to working closely with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”
