Liverpool will hold urgent talks with Darwin Nunez and the Uruguayan Football Federation (UFF), a source has told ESPN, to get a full picture of the events that resulted in the striker entering the stands and becoming involved in a physical confrontation with Colombia fans following Wednesday's Copa America semi-final.
Nunez faces the prospect of a suspension issued by organisers CONMEBOL, the South American Confederation, which could extend to club football if world governing body FIFA decides to intervene should CONMEBOL impose any sanctions.
Colombia secured a meeting with world champion Argentina in Sunday's final in Miami by defeating Uruguay 1-0 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
But the post-match incident, when Nunez entered the stands to confront spectators, has raised concerns that the 25-year-old could be handed a lengthy ban for his actions.
The Uruguayan newspaper El País reported that the section where Núñez entered was also occupied by friends and family members of the Uruguayan national team, which led Núñez to try to protect his family.
But a source told ESPN that Liverpool's football management will be in touch with Nunez as soon as time permits, taking into account the time difference between the UK and the US, primarily to check on his and his family's well-being, as well as to try to determine the facts behind the incident.
A source said Liverpool also plan to speak to the UFF before deciding on any possible action or statement on the situation.
Liverpool are scheduled to travel to the United States later this month for a pre-season tour under new manager Arne Slot before kicking off their Premier League campaign away to Ipswich Town on August 17.
Due to his involvement in the Copa America, Núñez was not expected to take part in Liverpool's tour of the United States.
