Lamine Yamal to miss Barcelona's US tour after Euro 2024

Lamine Yamal will miss Barcelona's pre-season tour of the United States after helping Spain win the European Championship this summer.

Yamal, 17, created the opening goal of the final as Spain beat England 2-1 in Berlin and was named Young Player of the Tournament in Germany.

The striker, who made his debut at the age of 15, will now have 21 days of rest, according to an agreement negotiated by the Spanish Footballers' Association [AFE]and Barça's first match in the United States will be against Manchester City on July 30 in Orlando.

The Catalan side will face Real Madrid on August 3 in New Jersey before finishing their tour with a match against AC Milan on August 6 in Baltimore.

Yamal has been rewarded for his excellent performances since he became a Barça player wearing the number 19 shirt that belonged to Lionel Messi between 2005 and 2008.

He played last season on a youth team basis but made 50 first-team appearances, the second-most of anyone in the squad, and will be officially promoted to the first team ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Yamal wore the number 27 shirt last year because he was registered with Barcelona's youth team, but all members of the LaLiga first team are required to wear numbers lower than 25.

Yamal's Euro 2024 campaign, where he scored one goal and assisted four more, ended on Sunday as Spain lifted the trophy for a record fourth time.

He then returned to Madrid on Monday with the rest of his international teammates to meet with the King of Spain, the President of the Government of the country and to continue the celebrations with the fans.

He returned to Barcelona on Tuesday, where he fulfilled several commercial commitments, including a visit to the renovation works being carried out at the Spotify Camp Nou alongside new coach Hansi Flick and his teammates Pedri and Gavi.

Later on Tuesday, he was finally able to celebrate his 17th birthday last Saturday, on the eve of the victory over England, at a dinner with family and friends.

His break therefore begins on Wednesday and will end on 7 August, when he is expected to return to pre-season training ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Monaco at the Stade Olympique on 12 August.

Barça will begin their LaLiga campaign on August 17 with a trip to Valencia.

Other members of Spain's Euro 2024-winning squad will also miss the US tour, albeit for different reasons.

Pedri will continue his recovery work in Barcelona after injuring his knee in the quarter-final victory over Germany, while Fermín López will join the Spanish under-23 team this week ahead of the Olympic Games in France.

Ferran Torres, for his part, also has permission to miss the trip to the United States, although it is not 100% ruled out that he will not fly towards the end of the expedition.
