Klay Thompson to join Mavericks on 3-year deal, ending historic run with Warriors: report

Five-time All-Star Klay Thompson is leaving the Golden State Warriors, the franchise he helped win four NBA championships during his 13 years in the league.

Thompson, 34, plans to join the Dallas Mavericks, winners of the Western Conference last season, on a three-year, $50 million contract that includes a player option, according to ESPN.

The deal is part of a multi-team sign-and-trade agreement that will also see the Mavericks trade Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets, ESPN added.

Thompson's time with the Warriors was almost officially coming to an end as he was looking for offers elsewhere. ESPN reported that he had received four-year offers from other teams with more money, but decided to accept less to join the Mavericks in hopes that they could return to the NBA Finals to add rings to their collection.

It will be strange for all NBA fans to see Thompson wearing a jersey that isn't filled with blue, yellow and white as he cemented himself as a legend in the Bay Area during his time with Golden State.

Alongside Stephen Curry, Thompson was part of the “Splash Bros” as the two point guards created one of the greatest shooting tandems in NBA history, and the hardware speaks for itself.

Curry is now the longest-tenured player on his current team in the league, following Thompson's departure.

While he has helped rewrite the record books for the Warriors and the NBA, Thompson's production hasn't been what it used to be, especially last season. Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game on 38.7 percent shooting from 3-point range, the second-lowest mark of his career.

Thompson, who missed two full seasons with a torn ACL and Achilles tendon in 2019 and 2020, respectively, came off the bench in 14 of his 77 games, the first time he did so since his rookie campaign in 2011.

Still, Thompson has proven to be a productive player, making 219 three-pointers last season, which was good for second in the NBA. Alongside Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić, Thompson can still be the shooting guard who has carried the Warriors for more than a decade.
