Hideki Matsuyama wins tournament without caddie or coach after three players were assaulted at airport

Hideki Matsuyama didn't let the wild circumstances affect him one bit.

Shortly after winning a bronze medal in Paris two weeks ago, he, his caddie and his coach were mugged at a London airport while en route to the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Matsuyama's caddie and coach were forced to return to Japan after their passports were stolen and they were unable to travel to the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

No problem. Matsuyama won the tournament and achieved his first victory in more than two and a half years.

Leading by just one stroke on the final hole, Matsuyama needed par or better for victory; a bogey would have put him in a three-way playoff with Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland.

But after finding the fairway on 18, he holed his shot to within 6 feet of the hole and birdied it, winning the tournament by two. He had also birdied 17 to break his tie with Schauffele and Hovland, last year's FedEx Cup winner.

Matsuyama moved from eighth to third in the FedEx Cup standings.

Matsuyama had his wallet stolen at the airport. Fortunately, no one took his Olympic medal.

After the incident, Matsuyama said he felt like “all the responsibility was on me.” Well, it certainly didn't seem like he had any more weight on his shoulders.

It wasn't an easy finish for Matsuyama, though, as he finished at even par for the day (he was 17-under for the tournament). Schauffele didn't look like he had much of a chance at the start of the day, but the two-time major champion carded a 63 to put himself in contention. But it wasn't enough.

Nick Dunlap parred his 72nd hole to secure a spot in next week's BMW Championship, which will be attended by only the top 50 in the Cup standings. However, Dunlap's par eliminated Tom Kim, now ranked 51st; he began the weekend in 43rd place.

Hovland's second-place finish moved him up 41 spots and into the race for next week.
