Bowling Green extended an offer to Eddie George of Tennessee State to be her next soccer chief coach, sources told ESPN on Saturday.
There is a mutual interest since the sides remain in discussion. George was one of the three finalists interviewed on Friday.
George is a former Heisman trophy winner in Ohio State and has become a successful chief coach in the FCS in Tennessee State. Last season, he directed the program to the FCS playoffs and a part of the OVC-Big South title, the first school league title in football since 1999.
Bowling Green is looking to replace Scot Loeffler, who left to become the Field Marshal coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. George would potentially return to the state of Ohio, where he won the Heisman trophy in 1995 and ran for 3,768 yards in four seasons with the Buckeyes.
Then the NFL starred for nine seasons, running for more than 10,000 yards. It was a first round of the Houston Oilers and made his name playing seven seasons in Nashville for the Titans. The Titans have removed their shirt, since it is the leading corridor of all the franchise.
The state of Tennessee hired George despite his lack of traditional training experience, with the president of the school at that time by calling “the correct choice and investment” for the future of TSU. George has worked as an actor and entrepreneur and obtained an MBA of Northwestern.
George paid the administration's faith when building the state of Tennessee in a winner, including a 9-4 season in 2024 that culminated in an appearance in the FCS playoffs. Tennessee's state lost to Montana in the first round. That marked the first offer of TSU FCS playoffs since 2013.
George's hiring in TSU continued the trend of former star players who were hired in historically black schools and universities. Jackson State gave the greatest splash to hire Deion Sanders, who went to a successful period in Colorado. Both the hiring of Michael Vick in the state of Norfolk and the employee of desired Jackson in Delaware State continued that trend in the current hiring cycle.
Bowling Green has become one of the main training trampolines in this generation, with Urban Meyer, Dave Clawson and Dino Bababers who advance from the work of the school conference to energy. Loeffler had 27-41 in six seasons, a race that included three consecutive bowl games in the last three seasons.
