Free agent Memphis Depay joins Brazilian club Corinthians

Memphis Depay has signed a two-year contract with Corinthians after leaving Atletico Madrid as a free agent in July, the Brazilian club announced on Monday.

The 30-year-old has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances for the Netherlands but was not called up for this month's Nations League matches. Ronald Koeman's side beat Bosnia 5-2 on Saturday and face Germany on Tuesday.

Depay's international career is far from over, however, as Koeman confirmed his move to Brazil will not hamper his chances of playing for the national team.

“I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn's transfer to Saudi Arabia, with Memphis it could be different,” Koeman told reporters on Monday.

“The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his physical condition and if he reaches their level.”

Depay began his career at PSV Eindhoven and has played for Lyon, Barcelona and Manchester United. Last season he made 31 appearances for Atlético in all competitions and scored nine goals.
