Former world number one Naomi Osaka announces her separation from coach Wim Fissette

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has announced that she is no longer working with coach Wim Fessette.

The parting of ways comes after Osaka's disappointing second-round exit at the US Open.

At Flushing Meadows, Osaka lost 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Karolina Muchova. Afterwards, she said: “It's a little bit tough, because I take these losses very personally. It's like a dramatic word, but I feel like my heart dies every time I lose.”

This is not the first time Osaka and Fissette have split up.

Fissette began working with Osaka shortly before the start of the 2020 season. They split in the summer of 2022 before working together again last year when Osaka returned to training after maternity leave.

The 26-year-old won two of her four Grand Slam titles while working with the Belgian coach and expressed her gratitude on her Instagram Story on Friday.

“4 years, 2 Grand Slams and a lot of memories. Thank you Wim for being a great coach and a great person. I wish you all the best.”

Fissette reflected on her time with Osaka in an Instagram post on Saturday.

“In 15 years of touring, this has been one of my best years working with amazing people,” Fissette wrote. “After each loss, we have worked harder and better and grown a lot. We were very close to making the leap.”

After the US Open, Osaka “decided to move forward with a new path,” she added. “I accepted it knowing that we closed this second run with more good memories and gratitude for having built her path back.”
