Former Memphis star recruit Mikey Williams enters the portal

Memphis freshman Mikey Williams is entering the transfer portal, the school announced Monday.

Williams had yet to play a game for the Tigers, as he was away from the team while the legal process stemming from his arrest in April unfolded.

“We can confirm that Mikey Williams has elected to enter the transfer portal,” the school said in a statement. “The university process for him to join the men’s basketball program was underway, but Williams decided to explore his options at this time.”

Rookie forward JJ Taylor, who played with Williams in San Ysidro (California), also entered the transfer portal on Monday, a school spokesperson confirmed to ESPN. Taylor, an ESPN 100 prospect in the class of 2023, appeared in three games this season for the Tigers.

Williams, a former star recruit who signed with Memphis in their class of 2023, was arrested last spring following an incident on March 27 at his home, when shots were allegedly fired at a car full of people who had left his residence.

He faced nine felony charges in the case, but pleaded guilty in November to a misdemeanor count of making criminal threats. The plea meant Williams could reduce the charge to a misdemeanor if he met a number of requirements before his scheduled sentencing in August.

At the time, the university said it had no update on Williams’ status with the team. She had announced in September that she would not have access to the team’s facilities or activities “until her pending legal process is completed.”

Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard with 3.6 million Instagram followers, was considered a five-star prospect early in his high school career, when he attracted national attention for his dunk exploits and his Youtube.
