Former LSU coach Les Miles sues school, claims overturned wins keep him out of College Football Hall of Fame

Former LSU football coach Les Miles has filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging that vacated wins from 2012 to 2015 keep him out of consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Miles is seeking an “appropriate remedy for the stain placed on his good name and reputation” as the school overturned 37 of his victories during that period, according to the lawsuit.

Removing those wins from his overall record puts him below .600 (108-73), which is a threshold for a coach to be considered for the Hall of Fame, which is overseen by the NCAA and the National Football Foundation. Both organizations are also named as defendants in the lawsuit.

The reason the Tigers self-imposed the vacancy of those 37 wins was due to an NCAA investigation, which uncovered a Level I recruiting violation while Miles was on the job as head coach.

The violation, which occurred in 2012, was included in the LSU program after a Tigers athletics representative paid the father of a prospective athlete a total of $180,150 over a five-year period in an embezzlement scheme Of funds. The athlete was enrolled at LSU from 2012 to 2016.

Miles was never able to defend his case, and the lawsuit accuses the university of carrying out the self-imposed punishment prematurely.

Miles would have been eligible for the Hall of Fame last November, when he turned 70. However, CBS Sports reports that no Division I school he coached for, including Oklahoma State and Kansas, are believed to have nominated him for induction.

With his overall record at .597, Miles hopes to get his record back above the threshold needed to be considered for induction into the prestigious Hall.

Miles first became a Division I college football head coach in 2001 with Oklahoma State, going 28-21 during his first seasons with the Cowboys.

However, his fame was earned in the Bayou, as he joined LSU in 2005., where he participated in two BCS Championship games, winning one of them in 2007. With the Tigers, Miles went 114-34, but only 77 of them officially count as of now.
