England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been fined 30,000 euros ($32,400) by UEFA for “breaching basic rules of decent behaviour” by making a crotch-grabbing gesture in front of the Slovakia bench during England's Euro 2024 round of 16 victory on Sunday.
The 21-year-old also received a one-game suspension that will take effect if he repeats the offending gesture at any point next year.
Bellingham made the gesture after scoring an equaliser with a overhead kick in the dying moments of added time to rescue England's campaign, before Harry Kane headed in the winner in extra time to book their place in the quarter-finals, where they face Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday.
Bellingham said on social media after the match that the action was an “inside joke between friends” but UEFA ordered its disciplinary body to investigate the gesture and handed down the fine and one-match ban on Friday.
England or Switzerland will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between the Netherlands and Turkey, which takes place later on Saturday.
