Ethiopian track star Lamecha Girma is recovering after a terrifying scene at the Men's 3000m steeplechase final where the current world record holder was carried off the track on a stretcher after falling on the final lap of Wednesday's race.

Girma was left motionless on the track at the Stade de France after apparently hitting the back of his head when he collided with the obstacle.
He was treated by several doctors before being fitted with a neck brace. He was then taken off the track on a stretcher.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) provided a positive update on Girma on Thursday.

“We understand that he is in good shape and doing well and is recovering,” the IOC said in a statement. via Reuters.
Girma was the defending silver medallist in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is also the current world record holder, with a time of 7:52.11 which he set in Paris in 2023.

Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco won the gold medal, followed by American Kenneth Rooks for silver and Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya for bronze.
