Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman and his wife Chelsea have had the “toughest, scariest days of our lives” this week.
The couple announced on Instagram that their 3-year-old son, Max, has been diagnosed with a “severe case” of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is “especially rare in children.”
The condition involves the immune system attacking the nerves, causing muscle weakness.

The couple detailed their terrifying experience in a joint post.
“Last Friday, Max deteriorated rapidly and became paralyzed,” the couple wrote. “We were very lucky to have gotten him to the hospital in time so his lungs could be strengthened. Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to catch the first flight home…
“These have been the most difficult and scary days of our lives. Maximus is a very special little boy and has been fighting VERY hard. It's going to be a long process to recover, but we have faith that he will heal completely.”
The Freemans say their son has made “improvements in the last 48 hours” that have left them “impressed.”

“Maximus' breathing tube was removed yesterday and he was taken off the ventilator, which is a huge victory for us,” they wrote.
“We believe in the power of prayer and have witnessed a miracle in his recovery. Please continue to cover Maximus and our family in your prayers. We truly appreciate and feel all of your support.”
Max has two older brothers, Charlie and Brandon, the latter of whom is six weeks older than Max, having been born via surrogate.

Freeman is in his third season with the Dodgers after spending his first 12 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, winning the World Series in his final game with them in 2021. He signed a six-year deal with LA.
He's hitting .288 with an .888 OPS.
