Detroit Mercy has mutually agreed to part ways with men's basketball coach Mike Davis after six seasons, the school announced Thursday.
The Titans went 1-31 last season and ended their campaign with a loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday in the Horizon League tournament.
“On behalf of our entire community, I want to thank Coach Davis and his family for their dedication, commitment and competitive spirit that they brought to Detroit Mercy,” athletic director Robert C. Vowels Jr. said in a statement. “We wish him and his family the best as he continues his coaching journey.”
Davis, who led Indiana to the national championship game in 2002, finishes his career in Detroit 60-119 overall and 44-65 in conference play. The Titans' best season during his tenure came in 2020-21, when they won 10 of their final 12 games to end the regular season before losing in the conference tournament.
Davis coached his son Antoine during his first five seasons in Detroit. Antoine Davis finished his career second on the NCAA's all-time men's scoring list, just three points behind Pete Maravich.
Prior to Detroit, Davis was the head coach at Texas Southern, UAB and Indiana, where he replaced Bob Knight after three years as an assistant in Bloomington. He made nine NCAA tournament appearances.
