College Baseball Week 1: Top 25 rankings, play of the week and what to watch

The first weekend of college baseball brought us everything we could have dreamed of. From upsets by top teams (UCLA lost a game to UC San Diego and Louisville lost its series to Michigan State) to historic grand slams, this season is already having a big impact. And with that, we have a new top 25, but it may not have as many changes as you might think.

Despite the loss, the Bruins maintain the number one spot and the five teams behind them remained steady. But the Cardinals' series loss dropped them from No. 8 to No. 15. Elsewhere, Vanderbilt and Arizona fell from the rankings, leaving room for Oklahoma and West Virginia.

Here's what the full Top 25 rankings look like as of February 16, plus our favorite plays and what we'll see in the next week.

Player of the week

Tyce Armstrong did the unthinkable in Baylor's first game of the weekend and hit not one, not two, but THREE grand slams for the Bears! He is only the second player to accomplish such a feat, the first being Louisville's Jim LaFountain on March 24, 1976. With a start like this, what else is in store for the senior for the rest of the season?

best plays

Grand Slams have been plentiful in recent days and, of course, one was likely to happen from the Box. This one came courtesy of LSU's Jake Brown, who helped the Tigers win 21-7 (7 innings).

On the other hand, Oregon State had an electric finish to beat Stanford on the final play of the game.

Series to watch

No. 7 TCU at No. 1 UCLA

Game 1: 8 pm Friday
Game 2: 5 p.m. Saturday
Game 3: 4 p.m. Sunday

A top 10 matchup at this point in the season? TCU jumped three spots in the standings thanks to impressive wins over Vanderbilt and Arkansas, and its only loss came to a surprisingly good Oklahoma team. But do the Horned Frogs have enough strength to defeat the number one team in the country? Well, with the series taking place in Los Angeles, it will certainly be a tall order. The Bruins looked solid in their two wins over UC San Diego, and they have the best player in the country in Roch Cholowsky, who certainly won't want to lose at home. He hit a home run over the weekend and will undoubtedly bring more pressure against TCU. Needless to say, we are eager to see how this series develops.
