Coco Gauff named flag bearer for US women's team at Paris Olympics opening ceremony


American Olympic tennis star Coco Gauff was named the female flag bearer for the opening ceremonies of the Paris Games on Wednesday, joining LeBron James in the honor.

Gauff, 20, is making her second Olympic appearance. At the 2021 Tokyo Games, she was 17 when she was named to the roster, becoming the second-youngest American player.

In the end, she did not make it to the Far East because she tested positive for coronavirus and was forced to withdraw just before her scheduled departure date.

With much of the pandemic behind us, Gauff will be seeking the first American Olympic medal in women's singles tennis since Serena Williams in 2012.

“What an honor! Thank you,” she wrote in one of her Instagram stories.

A medal would enhance an already impressive resume.

Last year she won the US Open final, defeating Aryna Sabalenka to claim her first Grand Slam singles title. She then added a Grand Slam doubles title with Katerina Siniakova at Roland Garros in June.

Roland Garros will host the Olympic tennis matches. The draw to determine the draws will take place on Thursday and the competition will begin on Friday. She arrives at the Olympics as one of the favourites to win at least one medal alongside Poland's Iga Swiatek.

Gauff will partner Jessica Pegula in the women's doubles. She could also compete in the mixed doubles event, but those pairings have not yet been announced.
