Chelsea's Palmer and Arsenal's Saka top PFA's list of young players

Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and Manchester United pair Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho lead the nominations for the 2023-24 PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Brighton striker Joao Pedro is also nominated, while Michael Olise, who left Crystal Palace to join Bayern Munich for £50m this summer, completes the six-man shortlist.

Palmer, 22, is nominated after a first season at Chelsea in which he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists. The former Manchester City striker was involved in more goals than any other Premier League player.

Arsenal winger Saka, also 22, won the award last year and is in contention to retain it after a campaign in which he scored 16 goals and provided nine assists as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Mainoo and Garnacho caught the eye when they helped United win the FA Cup, beating City in the final. Mainoo, 19, scored in that game to cap a remarkable breakthrough season, while Garnacho, 20, registered double-figure goals in all competitions.

João Pedro scored 20 goals in all competitions during his first season with Brighton; Olise scored 10 goals and provided six assists in just 19 appearances for Palace.

Nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award include Chelsea duo Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones, and Manchester United's Maya Le Tissier.

Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton (who spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur) and Manchester City duo Khiara Keating and Jess Park complete the list.

The winners will be revealed at the PFA Awards on 20 August at the Manchester Opera House.
