Champions League referees sacked for alleged drunken behaviour

Two Polish referees will not be involved in Dynamo kyiv's Champions League match against Rangers after the Polish Football Association (PZPN) said on Tuesday it was investigating reports of inappropriate behaviour.

Bartosz Frankowski, who was video assistant referee (VAR) at Euro 2024, had been appointed as VAR for the third qualifying round first leg in Lublin, Poland, on Tuesday, with compatriot Tomasz Musial acting as assistant.

UEFA confirmed to ESPN that both have been replaced and declined to comment further.

“The Polish Football Association's College of Referees will conduct a detailed analysis of the situation in connection with reports of inappropriate behaviour by two Ekstraklasa referees who were due to work at the Champions League qualifying match between Dynamo Kyiv and Rangers FC,” PZPN said in a statement.

Polish media reported that the two officers were seen carrying a traffic sign along a street in Lublin and that after police checked their alcohol levels, they were taken to a sobering-up room in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The pair have been replaced by Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Pawel Malec for the match which takes place in Poland due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Information from Reuters and ESPN's Dale Johnson contributed to this report.
