A Cardiff City player was left with a severed leg when an advertising screen fell on him under pressure from fans as the team celebrated a goal in a Welsh derby at Swansea City in the EFL Championship on Sunday.
The incident came a day after two West Ham players had to pull a ball boy out from under a collapsed advertising screen during a goal celebration in a Premier League match at Crystal Palace, and prompted Cardiff assistant manager Omer Riza to question whether there was sufficient security at Sunday's game.
Ollie Tanner had to receive treatment for a cut on his leg after setting up the equaliser in a 1-1 draw but was then injured during the subsequent celebrations when Cardiff fans behind the goal ran towards the players and advertising screens gave way.
“You look around and think, 'Maybe there should be more security around the pitch?' So that fans can't get close to the advertising boards,” Riza said.
“It was a very heavy sign that fell and Ollie has a big cut on his leg… He's fine, he kept going and going, but he had to come off the field for 30 seconds and that could have hurt us in that period.”
Swansea manager Luke Williams said each team must review their safety measures around the perimeter of the pitch following the events of the weekend.
“It's something that security at all clubs will need to look at because there was an incident at the West Ham game as well,” Williams said.
“I suppose there will now be a reaction from the authorities and security agents, who will decide what is best.”
