Carabao Cup third round draw: Liverpool host West Ham

Holders Liverpool begin their defence of the Carabao Cup by hosting Premier League rivals West Ham United in the third round at Anfield.

Wednesday's draw also pitted Premier League champions Manchester City at home to second-tier Watford, while Arsenal host League One side Bolton Wanderers at the Emirates.

Manchester United have a home game against League One side Barnsley at Old Trafford, Tottenham Hotspur travel to second-tier Coventry and 2024 losing finalists Chelsea host fourth-tier Barrow.

In the third round, teams taking part in European competitions this season enter the competition after the rest of the Premier League teams have started in the second round. The matches will be played in the weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.

West Ham beat Bournemouth on Wednesday in a Premier League clash that was decided by a deflected goal from Jarrod Bowen in the 88th minute at the London Stadium.

In other top-flight clashes, Newcastle United eliminated Nottingham Forest 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Bournemouth were also eliminated at the first hurdle.

Fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon emerged as giant-killers in the second round, beating promoted Ipswich 4-2 on penalties after a spirited 2-2 draw in front of a crowd of 7,900 in south-west London.

They were rewarded in the draw with a third-round home game against Newcastle.

Ipswich Town were trailing 2-1 and heading for elimination in normal time when Conor Chaplin headed in an 86th-minute equaliser to force a penalty shoot-out.

Dons goalkeeper Owen Goodman then saved shots from Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson.

“The story of the underdog in football. It's another incredible night and another chapter in that story,” Wimbledon coach Johnnie Jackson told the BBC.

“As a football club we always have to do it the hard way, but we find a way.”

Championship side Cardiff City conceded plenty of goals and came from three down against Southampton before losing 5-3 to the Premier League visitors after stoppage-time goals from James Bree and Cameron Archer.

Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford, with English striker Ivan Toney absent pending interest from other clubs, beat Burnley and Colchester United 2-0 and 1-0 respectively.

Goncalo Guedes scored either side of half-time to send Wolves through, while Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson saved a Jack Payne penalty after Keane Lewis-Potter had scored in the 45th minute.
