Former Baylor and BYU basketball player Caleb Lohner will return to the state where he began his college career, but as a Utah football player.
The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Lohner, who entered the transfer portal on April 10, announced his commitment Monday to join the Utah football team., adding that he “could potentially also contribute on the court” for the Utes. Lohner, a graduate transfer, is projected to play tight end for Utah, which returns standout Brant Kuithe.
Lohner appeared in 69 games for Baylor, averaging 3.2 points per game in 2022-23 and 2.4 points per game last season. He initially committed to play basketball for BYU after moving to the state from Texas to finish high school, but ultimately received a waiver from his national letter of intent in order to sign with BYU.
Lohner started 44 games for BYU, averaging seven points per game and 6.4 rebounds in his final season there before transferring to Baylor.
He scored a season-high 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting in Baylor's win over UC-Santa Barbara in the first round of the 2023 NCAA tournament. Lohner recently attended Utah's spring football game in Salt Lake City.
