Bürki hopes his former Dortmund teammate Marco Reus will join the MLS

St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Bürki has said he hopes to see Marco Reus join Major League Soccer this summer or next year, and revealed that he is continuing to convince his former Borussia Dortmund teammate to join the team of second year expansion.

“I spoke to Marco Reus before the Champions League game, I sent him a text message, we didn't talk about the move then because he was obviously focused on the game, but Major League Soccer has a good chance of seeing him next year or next. summer,” Bürki told ESPN.

“I don't know which team, I'm still trying [to convince him] but at some point it depends on [sporting director] lutz [Pfannenstiel] and [club owner] Carolina [Kindle] to make a move.”

Bürki admitted that he would be willing to give up the captain's armband if that were the price to pay for Reus' arrival at St. Louis.

ESPN previously reported that St. Louis City is one of the MLS teams pursuing the Borussia Dortmund attacker as his contract with the German team expires in the coming weeks. Although talks remain preliminary, sources told ESPN that the club remains in contention.

St. Louis City coach Bradley Carnell called the possible reunion of Bürki and Reus a “fairy tale,” before urging caution.

“Every time a transfer window opens, whether it's our club or not, everyone gets names. We've had a lot of names either joining now or joining in six months,” Carnell told ESPN.

“We review our lists and see if it makes sense or not. When we are in the position we are in, I'm sure maybe something will come up. The Marco Reus rumors are flattering, it would be something interesting for the League and our team.

“He is one of Roman's best friends, it would be a nice fairy tale story. But sometimes reality is far from that. We are working and finding out things, but right now there is nothing to say about the Marco Reus rumor. But the window opens very soon.”

St. Louis owner Kindle is aware of the current rumors circulating around the club, but echoed Carnell's sentiments.

“It's absolutely amazing [being linked to Reus.] In full disclosure, it is difficult to separate fact from fiction,” Kindle said.

“Sometimes I call and ask about the rumors. But I thought it would take us three to five years to get to this point of being linked to these figures and we're in year two and these rumors are amazing. The people of St. Louis are excited “

Although the club remains unknown, Bürki insisted the German would soon be in the United States to continue the rest of his career after losing the 2024 Champions League final to Real Madrid.
