Brett Favre backs Patrick Mahomes' stance on running for president amid Trump-Taylor Swift controversy

Patrick Mahomes has maintained his poise so far this season, despite being under constant pressure. It's a performance that has impressed another multiple NFL MVP.

In a dramatic 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Mahomes led the Chiefs on another game-winning drive alongside tight end Travis Kelce. But for the second straight game, his teammates played separately.

Mahomes' wife, Brittany, posted several photos on her Instagram Stories of herself with her two children. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift, Kelce's girlfriend, appeared several times on the CBS broadcast in her own booth celebrating the Chiefs.

It was the Chiefs’ first game since former President Trump sent out a post on Truth Social that read “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” after the pop star endorsed Vice President Harris for president. Brittany has been linked to several shows of support for Trump on social media and even earned praise from the former president during an interview on “Fox & Friends” last week. In that interview, Trump said he “liked Brittany Mahomes a lot more” than Swift after the endorsement. Her interactions with Trump have seen her endure a severe backlash on social media in recent weeks, with much of it coming from Swift’s fans.

But the quarterback praised his wife's influence in the community when asked about comments Trump made about her at a news conference last week. Mahomes also said he wouldn't make any political endorsements himself. Still, he encouraged Americans to vote.

Brett Favre, a three-time NFL MVP and Pro Football Hall of Famer, praised Mahomes for taking that stance, while also criticizing Swift for backing Harris.

“Good comment Mahomes. I see a lot of celebrities trying to influence their audience instead of letting people think for themselves. If they don't have a clear idea of what's best for them and are easily swayed by their favorite pop artist, it's not going to be good,” Favre wrote in a post on X in response to an OutKick video featuring Mahomes' comments.

Favre did not take that route in the last presidential election. The Hall of Fame quarterback endorsed Trump on Oct. 30, 2020, in a post on X, citing his stance on free speech issues, gun rights and support for the military and police.

“My vote is for what makes this country great, freedom of speech and religion, the second amendment, citizens who work hard and pay their taxes, the police and the military. In this election, we have freedom of choice, which everyone must respect. For me and for these principles, my vote is for [Donald Trump]”, wrote Favre.

Favre made the endorsement despite having said on multiple occasions that he believes sports are becoming “too political.”

Like Brittany Mahomes, Favre has also faced criticism for his political beliefs. In late 2020 and early 2021, Favre hosted a podcast called “Bolling With Favre” with TV personality co-host Eric Bolling. Favre drew criticism with comments on a number of topics, including his stance on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem and his desire to keep transgender people out of women's sports.

After Derek Chauvin, the police officer responsible for George Floyd's death, was sentenced to prison, Favre said on the podcast that he found it “hard to believe” that Chauvin intended to kill George Floyd. These comments sparked backlash from current NFL players, including former Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith and fellow former NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith.

The podcast was discontinued in June 2021.

Mahomes hasn't courted any of the same controversy as Favre in his young career. He has, however, been involved in helping his wife deal with the criticism she's received for her outpouring of support for Trump over the past month, she said.

In a recent episode of the “WHOOP” PodcastBrittany said she leaned on her husband, a three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, to get her through the recent public scrutiny.

“Having him to help me through it has helped me a lot, because he's so good at handling that stuff and blocking people out and doing all that kind of stuff,” she said. “Having him by my side and guiding me, mentoring me, has helped me a lot. I think that's what's gotten us to where we are now.”

She added that her husband helped her develop a “don't give a f–k” attitude.

“I think the main thing he always told me was, 'Stop worrying about what people think, especially people who don't even know you,'” she said. “I think social media used to affect me a lot, and now I honestly don't give a shit what people have to say about me anymore.”

“And I think it's helped me get to that point where I'm strong in who I am, I'm confident in who I am, I'm confident in my relationship with him and in our life. So why does it matter what other people say?”

Brittany and Patrick were born and raised in East Texas. They began dating while attending Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas, when Patrick was the school's quarterback and Brittany played football. Whitehouse is a town with a population of about 8,500 and has a history of voting Republican, according to Data USA.

Meanwhile, Swift has endorsed Democratic candidates since 2018, when she backed Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections in Tennessee.

Then in 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden for president, and her endorsement of Harris on Tuesday is likely to have a stronger impact. It's her first presidential endorsement since her popularity surged thanks to her Eras tour and her public relationship with Kelce.

Swift and Brittany were seen in the same suite at most of the Chiefs games Swift attended last year, and were often the focus of NFL broadcasts multiple times per game. That hasn't happened at either of the Chiefs' two home games yet.

Brittany and Swift were recently spotted together, hugging, when they, Mahomes and Kelce went to the US Open to watch the men's singles final on Sept. 8.

However, Swift did attend the quarterback's birthday party on Monday. Swift appeared in photos with Mecole Hardman's fiancée Chariah Gordon and Chris Jones' wife Sheawna Weathersby. Gordon posted photos from a photo booth that was apparently set up for the party. Other than that, Swift kept a low profile as the spotlight focused on the three-time Super Bowl winner. Swift and Brittany Mahomes were not seen together in any photos. It was not confirmed if they interacted at the event.

The Chiefs' next game is in Atlanta against the Falcons on Sunday night, but they won't return to Arrowhead Stadium until a game against the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 7, with less than a month until the election.
