Andy Robertson admits lack of clarity over Liverpool's future

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has admitted he does not know if he will be at the club next season before his contract expires in the summer.

Robertson was a near-ever presence at Anfield under former manager Jürgen Klopp and was a key member of Arne Slot's Premier League title team last season.

However, the left-back was linked with a move away from Anfield last summer following the £40 million ($54 million) signing of Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth, who has started most of Liverpool's league games this season.

“We'll see what happens,” Robertson said when asked about his future. “We have had conversations now that will remain private. [I’ve] spoke with [the club] and we'll see what happens.

When asked if he would like to stay at Liverpool, the Scotland international said: “Yes, but it's a difficult question to answer. I have five months left and we have to see the option of staying or if there are options of leaving and things like that. I will sit down with my family and decide.”

“After a stressful summer, I'm just trying to enjoy being part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and luckily we did. “I need to see what me and my family want in the future.

Robertson joined Liverpool in an £8 million transfer from Hull City in 2017 and has made more than 350 appearances for the club, winning a number of major honours, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Reflecting on whether the coming months will determine his decision, the 31-year-old said: “I don't think so. I have given absolutely everything to the club over the last eight and a half years and the club has been very good to me. They have rewarded me with good contracts when I have played well.

“No one can deny what I've given to this club. I've given it my all day in and day out and I've put in some performances that I think have been good and I hope others agree. I've won a lot of trophies and I've had a lot of good days here. So that's not exactly what the club needs to show in the next four months. My relationship with the people at the top at the club has always been excellent from the day I joined. Signing me for £8 million and then doing what I've done helps that — I remind the club! people all the time!

“The relationship is good and it's not exactly 'what do you need to show me and what do I need to show you' as we have shown each other more than enough respect over the last eight and a half years and we will see what happens.

Robertson added: “Jürgen Klopp left me out of a game and I was furious! So I'm a player who wants to play. I've played despite injuries. I've played when I'm not 100% fit. I've played when I was only 50,40, 30% fit for this club and my country. I always want to be on the pitch and play and obviously now that's not happening so that's what's different. But I have this season I have a different role that I'm enjoying, but at last and in the end the footballers want to play and if someone is happy on the bench it is because they do not belong to any football club.

“That's always my argument, you always have to want to push yourself to be in the team. If you're happy to be at Liverpool or Barnsley and you want to sit on the bench, then I don't think you have the right attitude. I've played well in the games I've played this season. Maybe I haven't played as much as I would have liked, but it's nothing that has surprised me. Let's see what happens.”
