Uruguay defeated Canada on penalties in the Copa America third-place match on Saturday after a 2-2 draw at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Canada's Ismaël Koné had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and Alphonso Davies hit the crossbar as Uruguay won the shootout 4-3.
Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luis Suárez converted Uruguay's efforts past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, while Jonathan David, Moïse Bombito and Mathieu Choinière got in their shots for Canada, which went on to prevail in the shootout.
In the first half, Rodrigo Bentancur turned and powered home a corner to give Uruguay the lead in the eighth minute, but Kone scored with an acrobatic scissor kick to level the score 14 minutes later.
Canada took the lead in the 80th minute when Kone fired a long-range shot that Rochet deflected, before Jonathan David tapped in the rebound.
Uruguay equalised thanks to all-time top scorer Suárez, who timed his run perfectly in the 92nd minute to head home a cross from José María Giménez and score his 69th international goal to force a penalty shootout.
The match was played on the same pitch where Uruguay players entered the stands and fought with Colombia fans following a 1-0 semi-final defeat on Wednesday night.
This match was much calmer than the heated semi-final, with an announced attendance of 24,386, compared with more than 70,000 (the overwhelming majority cheering for Colombia) on Wednesday night.
Canada, which hired American Jesse Marsch as coach in May, will look back at the tournament as one of its best performances since winning the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2000. The Canadians reached the World Cup for the second time in 2022, their first since 1986.
On Sunday, defending champion Argentina will face Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, to decide the continental title. Argentina and Uruguay are tied for the most Copa titles with 15 each.
