On Sunday, in the women's 100-meter butterfly final at the Paris Olympics, the American team emerged victorious.
Torri Huske claimed her first career Olympic gold medal with a narrow victory over Gretchen Walsh, giving the Americans first and second place in the event. Walsh had to settle for the second silver medal of her Olympic career.

Huske touched the wall after 55.59 seconds and Walsh after 55.63 seconds. China's Zhang Yufei took the bronze medal.
Huske and Walsh were the early favorites, but the U.S. hadn't won a medal in the event since the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, when Dana Vollmer won bronze. Vollmer was also the last American to win gold in the event, having won in 2012 in London.
Huske had the third fastest heat at 56.72 and finished second in the semi-finals at exactly 56 seconds.

Walsh set an Olympic record in the semifinals, with a time of 55.38. Walsh also holds the world record in the event, which was set in June at the U.S. Olympic trials.
With Huske's win, the United States maintained its lead in total medals with nine, but only earned two gold medals in the event.
