This election is not about Trump's policies. it's about democracy

To the editor: Doyle McManus's column about former President Trump's evasions in key positions is an example of how the majority of the media misinterprets this race. He and other commentators are treating this election as if it were between two older gentlemen with some political differences.

But this election is not about, say, whether we should put more ethanol in jet fuel or whether we should even be able to control our own bodies. It's about whether we will ever have the ability to debate or vote on any of these issues again.

McManus complains that Trump is not clear on issues where evasion is convenient for him. But Trump doesn't have to deal with the problems, because that's not what this election is about. It's about whether we will have a democracy when the smoke clears.

We, as readers and voters, should know about the not-so-secret plans to fill government jobs with people whose primary qualification is being loyal to Trump. We need to know what this country will be like on the first day of the dictatorship.

If former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is right that we are “sleepwalking” toward a dictatorship (and I believe she is), the media is not safeguarding us with the truth, but rather acting more as a sedative.

To the editor: McManus thinks Trump is slippery like an eel. This reminds us of “Slick Willy” Bill Clinton and “Teflon” President Ronald Reagan. Many call Governor Gavin Newsom a slippery snake.

One of the truly bipartisan facts of our time is that politicians on both sides are often slippery. Of course, it matters what your definition of the word “is” is.

To the editor: McManus makes it. Trump will not give his opinion on certain policies. He doesn't have a policy and says things that he believes will resonate with his base, whether he believes it, it's his policy or it's just an old lie.

Just as he will not admit that he will accept the results of the 2024 elections if he does not win.

For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone could vote for that man. Trump will do things that are good for him and his ego, he will forget what is good for the country, the American people or the world.

God help us if he wins in November.
