There is nothing enriching about protecting the Ballona wetlands

To the editor: The Times has been publishing misleading letters to the editor from reader David Kay about the Ballona wetlands for years.

In a letter published shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks, Kay compared environmental advocates trying to protect the Ballona Wetlands to the 9/11 terrorists. In his most recent letter, he accused many of those same advocates of using California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) litigation to enrich themselves, and singled out the organization I lead, the Ballona Wetlands Land Trust.

The Times is not required to publish every defamatory allegation Kay makes.

I have been volunteering my time for the protection of the Ballona wetlands for over 20 years and currently volunteer full-time. I am also a major donor to our nonprofit. There is no personal enrichment involved. Kay knows this, but she made the accusation anyway.

Furthermore, Kay's characterization of our successful litigation is completely without merit. The court agreed with us that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife had designed its project using the wrong flood control metrics, which is hardly a trivial technicality.
