to the editor: The article about Major League Soccer's viewership decline this season was interesting, if not a little surprising (“Why the 2026 World Cup may not help American soccer leagues increase their popularity” November 4). I thought the popularity of MLS had been growing steadily. As a long-time soccer fan (as in real soccer, played with your feet), recreational player, and youth coach, I have found that the quality of the game has improved greatly and is even entertaining to watch these days.
However, even I have watched far fewer games over the past two seasons. Because? Because they are broadcast on Apple TV, a paid streaming service.
At this crucial juncture in MLS history, it is a big mistake not to broadcast games on network or “free” television, where anyone can simply tune in and watch a game. Personally, I found it very frustrating when games moved to Apple TV. Big mistake.
