Speed traps and small speed bumps: Readers on slowing PCH traffic

To the editor: My suggestion for slowing vehicle traffic on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway is the installation of circular, yellow, reflective speed bumps several inches high.

Cars that are speeding will be forced to slow down. The noise caused by driving over potholes is a passive way of informing drivers to slow down. At night, reflectivity will encourage drivers to drive carefully.

To the editor: According to officials, citations have increased and accidents have decreased slightly in Malibu in response to the tragic deaths there.

But what can reduce accidents the most is the fear of a significant fine. I suggest signs that say, in effect:

“This is a speed trap. You are three times more likely to get a ticket here than anywhere else in Los Angeles. Our cameras are watching you.”

Spend $500 on a speeding ticket? Lose a license? Possibly spend a night in jail? No thanks, I think I'll relax my right foot a little.
