Sam Rubin, my son's soccer coach, treated us all like celebrities

To the editor: You may be flooded with memories of Sam Rubin, but here are mine. (“Sam Rubin, longtime KTLA journalist and entertainment host, dies at 64,” May 10)

Fifteen years ago, Sam coached his daughter's AYSO soccer team, which my daughter was also on. Despite a series of losses (they were 7-year-olds and only one player on the team had any real enthusiasm for the game), Sam's grace and smile never failed. He was exactly the same person on the field that viewers saw on the air, and he treated every person he encountered as if he were a celebrity.

“Coach Sam” will always be in our hearts. He was exceptional.

To the editor: I was very saddened to learn of the untimely death of “Sammy” (as I knew him) Rubin.

Sammy was a talented high school student reporter for KLCS “Student News” in the 1970s. Later in his professional career, I reconnected with Sam when he hosted (for free) a documentary I produced.

He was kind, talented and hardworking. We will miss you.
