to the editor: My best childhood memories of the early 1950s come from when I lived in Pacoima on Van Nuys Boulevard, walking hand in hand with my grandfather down the boulevard where all the black- and Mexican-owned small businesses were located.
I was so proud to read Jasmine Mendez's article recognizing Stylesville Barbershop & Beauty Salon as the oldest black-owned business in the city of Los Angeles (“Historic black barbershop in the San Fernando Valley receives an emblematic plaque from the city” October 12). Noting the worn state of the barber chairs, I hope that someone with the means to do so will come and replace them, or perhaps there can be a fundraiser in the neighborhood.
