Organizations, including Qualcomm and Wiliot, have announced the formation of the Environmental Alliance, an ecosystem of several standards of environmental IoT manufacturers, suppliers, integrators, operators, users and customers.
Ambient IoT is an ecosystem for devices that extract energy from environmental radio waves, light, movement, heat or any other widely available generalized source. Bluetooth, 5g Advanced and 802.11BP could help support this kind of devices, which offers high scalability and, potentially, lower costs than non -environmental versions, the alliance said. The term environmental IoT could be applied to a wide variety of “things without battery”, such as sensors for location, temperature and humidity.
In the press release, the Ambient Ioot alliance said that its ecosystem is not intended to replace any other standardization activity; On the other hand, the group will promote environmental IoT and contribute to documentation, support and cases of use to standardization efforts when appropriate.
Who are the founding members of the Environmental Alliance?
The founding members of the Ambient IoT alliance include:
- Atmosic
- Infineon Technologies Ag.
- Intel
- Pepsic
- Qualcomm.
- VUSIONGroup.
- Wiliot.
The founders of the group expect companies, telecommunications companies, technology suppliers and standard agencies to join to accelerate formal and global environmental standardization that is already in progress between IEEE (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth SIG and 3GPP (5G Advanced).
What will the ambient alliance enable?
The vision of the alliance is to connect wireless radios to mobile devices and appliances to more devices with IoT networks. The ambient alliance sees that this method is used in “supply chains, retail channels and health provision services.”
The method is also an opportunity to collect the great data sets that artificial intelligence can be ordered. Ambient IoT could realize the potential of ROI of the AI and revolutionize supply chains or customer experiences, the group proposed.
Environment IoT Potentially offers energy reduction options
As devices without battery, IoT's environmental components offer a way to reduce energy use and, at best, minimize maintenance time.
“Ambient IoT is well aligned with the strategic approach of Infineon in the leadership of IoT and energy and our motto of promoting digitalization and decarbonization,” said Dr. Kamesh Medapalli, senior vice president of Secure Systems, Infineon Technologies.
Specifically, Ambient IoT proponents say it can “convert” the way that wireless monitoring devices use energy.
“Ambient IoT is the key to the sustainable adoption of IoT,” said the CEO of Atmosic, David his. “It allows us to perform wireless monitoring solutions to use very little energy or harvested energy, so that everything can remain continuously connected and companies can operate with maximum efficiency.”
