Plant-based diets are about saving the planet, not partisan politics

To the editor: Your article on the partisan politics of meat consumption mentions no political reason behind Democrats being vegetarian, instead linking the choice to decadent, elite sensibilities.

In fact, as Nature Biotechnology recently editorialized, “the cost of meat consumption” to the environment is “profound”: the annual consumption of 82 billion animals causes “massive greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, water use, deforestation, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and water and air pollution.”

To the editor: Hey Republicans, just a quick heads up.

You sure love your candidate, who was convicted of 34 felonies in a witch hunt. And of course, his sexual assault conviction was a farce. Impeachments, insurrection, stolen classified documents… it's all fake news.

But beware: your guy is 78 years old and not in shape. If you press “R” on November 5, you might not be voting for your favorite criminal, but for a vegetarian.

To the editor: It's very simple.

A plant-based diet is significantly less expensive than a meat-based diet.

It is environmentally sustainable (no cow farts heating up the atmosphere).

It is demonstrably healthier (no cholesterol-induced disorders requiring statins).

It's kinder (no slaughterhouses).

Promoting healthy weight control is a victory in curbing weight gain in the United States.

Who wouldn’t like that? Long live Usha Vance, the wife of vice presidential candidate JD Vance! I am proud to be called “liberal, cowardly and feminine.”
