to the editor: The reason we need a free press is so it can report on government and business failures as well as their achievements. The Department of Defense's policy that the media can only release information authorized by the department is ridiculous (“'Unprecedented': Virtually all media outlets reject Pentagon's restrictive press policy,” October 14).
Almost every government agency in the nation and every corporation would no doubt love to implement this kind of policy: “Print and transmit only what we give you, don't look for anything that will make us look bad.”
