Newsom is right in your effort to compete with Texas Republicans

To the editor: I totally disagree with the Mark Z. Barabak column, the proposal of the governor of Lambasting Gavin Newsom to counteract the redistribution of threatened Texas districts (“Gavin Newsom threatens California voters. It reflects a terrible trend.” July 23). When proposition 20 was approved in 2010, California voters still believed that our democracy was protected by a system of controls and balances. But things have changed radically since then.

Project 2025, a plan connected to several in the administration of President Trump And with which Its policies have been aligned so farIt means undermining the bases in which our system is built. California is under threat, and the federal government takes away funds and trampling the legal authorities of our State. If the Republicans in Texas and other places essentially help manipulate the 2026 elections until the redistribution of districts of the decade, those of us who still believe in democracy we have to defend by winning elections at the state level and ensuring that Texas Republicans cannot take power disproportionately in national elections.

It would be naive to prioritize the protection of a 15 -year voting measure when equity in our elections is at stake. I appreciate that Newsom recognizes this and support your proposal.
